SIU's Student Employment Program is a cooperative effort between the Career Development Center, Financial Aid, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and the University hiring departments. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a member of the National Student Employment Association and employs approximately 2,000 students on campus, annually. The Student Employment Program is dedicated to enhancing student development by creating challenges and teaching responsibility.

The Submit a Job link connects departmental staff to the comprehensive online hiring process.

The Student Employment Supervisor's Manual was developed to assist departmental staff who are involved with student employees. 

The Student Employment Job Classifications list will help the departmental staff determine the complete, correct Position ID Number(s) currently assigned to their department.  

The Student Payroll Schedule provides departmental staff access to the Payroll Office website.

The Student Grievance Process provides student employees with a guide to help them resolve any conflict or misunderstanding of student employment policies or regulations with the employer.

Remember

Student employees must have a direct deposit to either a personal checking or savings account or an established debit account.

Important Semester Dates

Spring 2024:

First day of employment: January 7th (New students only. Students enrolled in Fall 2023 may start on December 24th, 2023).

Classes begin: January 16th

Break period: March 9th - March 17th

Last day of employment: May 11th

Summer Intersession 2024:

First day of employment: May 12th

Classes begin: May 13th

Last day of employment: August 3rd

Summer 2024:

First day of employment: June 9th (New students only. Students enrolled in Summer 2024 may start on May 12th.)

Classes begin: June 10th

Classes end: August 2nd

Last day of employment: August 3rd

Fall 2024:

First day of employment: August 18th (New students only. Current Students may continue to work through Fall Intersession.)

Classes begin: August 19th

Break period: November 23rd - December 1st

Campus closed: November 28th and November 29th

Last day of employment: December 21st
